The Endocannabinoid System
Ok, first the definition
Endocannabinoid System - this is a molecular system that is responsible for regulating and balancing many processes in the body. The immune system response, communication between cells, and memory just to name a few. This like other molecular systems have receptors, cells that receive messages. Receptors are found throughout the body like in the brain, organs, connective tissues and glands for example. Endocannabinoids bind (attach to) a receptor.
Endocannabinoids are produced by the human body and they work with receptors that are distributed throughout the body. When there is an imbalance in the body such as inflammation or chronic pain, an imbalance is created. Typically the body produces enough endocannabinoids to then bring the body back in balance.
Research, actually exciting research
Dr. Mechoulan discovered (in the 1990’s) and identified 2 endocannabinoids which are produced by the human body and work with receptors that are distributed across the entire body. As the body ages, everything becomes low & slow! In other words, as we age we lose endocannabinoids. Research suggests (Dr. Sang Park, senior scientist at Colorado State University) that CBD has the ability to replace the lost endocannabinoids. This same research suggests that CBD may be able to bind to the body’s endocannabinoid receptors or interact in a way that helps to bring the body back to homeostasis! Dr. Park also emphasizes that quality of a CBD product is not guaranteed because of potential heavy metals and pesticides that may end up in the product (GJSentinel, 2020). Hello HYDROPONICS!
